Thursday 23 October 2025 Year 3 Week 8: Wood You Believe It? EGGER Visits Year 3! To finish our half term in style, Year 3 were visited by representatives from EGGER, our local manufacturing company in Hexham. The visitors explained how EGGER turns wood into a range of useful products, such as chipboard and furniture panels, which are used in homes, schools, and workplaces all over the UK.

Friday 17 October 2025 Gingerbread Houses in Reception The Reception bakers were busy making gingerbread houses this week! Prompted by the houses on the Venetian waterside in the painting, children wrote lists of ingredients, mixed, squeezed, rolled, baked and of course ate, delicious gingerbread.

Friday 10 October 2025 Year 3 Week 6: Buildings That Bloom Like Trees This week our budding artists have been diving into the world of architecture and imagination through our Take One Picture art project. Using drawings, paint, and mixed media, pupils studied the reflections and textures of buildings rising from the canals. They experimented with the idea of the houses in Venice growing out of the water like trees to create their own Venetian-inspired houses using branches.

Friday 10 October 2025 Starting to write in Reception! As we come to the end of our single letter sounds in phonics, Reception are starting to use their knowledge to write words! They labelled objects they could see in the Regatta on the Grand Canal, e.g. 'g' for gondola, 'bt' for boat. We are so impressed with everyone's skills!

Friday 3 October 2025 Week 5: Row, Paint, Repeat: Exploring Regattas This week, members of Tyne Amateur Rowing Club visited school to talk about rowing as a modern sport. They explained how rowers train, the teamwork involved, and what it feels like to compete in regattas today. Pupils were fascinated to learn how modern equipment compares with traditional wooden boats.

Wednesday 1 October 2025 Painting in Year 4 This week, Year 4 have been working collaboratively to recreate a giant version of Regatta on the Grand Canal by Canaletto. The project began with each student sketching a section of the painting. Then, using primary colours, they carefully mixed and blended paints to match the tones and shades of the original artwork.

Friday 26 September 2025 Masks! This week, Year 2 have been exploring Venetian culture through mask making, inspired by A Regatta on the Grand Canal as part of our Take One Picture project. The children began by learning about traditional Venetian masks and their role in festivals like Carnevale. They then designed their own masks, choosing between a full-face or half-mask style, and planned how they would decorate them. Using a shared mould and modroc (plaster bandages), they created their mask casts, learning how to layer, shape, and smooth the material. We're looking forward to seeing how they bring them to life with colour and decoration next!

Friday 26 September 2025 Mr Grumpy's Outing in Reception Inspired by the gondolas in our Take One Picture (A Regatta on the Grand Canal), Reception read Mr Grumpy's Outing. They used small world characters to walk through and retell the story.

Saturday 20 September 2025 Rosh Hashanah Interactive Broadcast On September 16th, Y4 took part in a live interactive Zoom call with the Jewish Museum of London. Sele First School came together with lots of other schools from across the UK to discuss Rosh Hashanah. Rosh Hashanah is a Hebrew term meaning 'Head of the Year' and is when Jewish people celebrate New Year. After learning a little bit about Rosh Hashanah last week in our RE lessons, children were excited to spot some of the artefacts and images that they already knew about from their lesson.
