Thursday 26 September 2024 Shapes in Reception This week, Reception found 2D and 3D shapes in The Courtyard of a House in Delft, our Take One Picture. Inspired by this, they made shape monsters, categorised shapes and printing with 3D shapes.

Wednesday 25 September 2024 Year One Pottery Studio What an exciting start to the week we have had in Year One! Children have been working with clay to make their own Delft plates. First we made a ball, then we rolled it to the correct depth using a rolling pin and some depth marking guides. Next we cut the clay with the tools into a circle and pressed it into a mould to give it its shape. Hopefully next week we'll be able to paint and glaze the plates before displaying them. Have a look at these potters in action!

Friday 20 September 2024 Poetry in Year 3 Over the past few weeks we have been learning about poetry. On Thursday, we had a visit from Dr Martin Dubois, an expert in poetry! He talked to us about how poetry might look different on a page to a story, and how it's meant to be read aloud. He shared with us a poem about the different names for rain by Kate Wakeling. We especially loved 'tongue tickler' as a name for rain!

Thursday 19 September 2024 All About Us in Reception Children have had a busy week! To support settling in, we read The Colour Monster and talked about different feelings. The different colour monsters visited the classroom and we wrote messages on post-it notes to make them feel better. Children drew self-portraits using mirrors.

Wednesday 18 September 2024 Year 4 PE Year 4 will be participating in tennis, lacrosse, rugby and cricket this term. The whole school focus is on 'team work'. In their first lessons, Year 4 have demonstrated excellent communication and we were delighted to see children actively encouraging their peers.

Wednesday 11 September 2024 Year One Delft plates and more... Taking inspiration from this year's Take One Picture - A Courtyard of a house in Delft' - Year One have been looking at Delft pottery on the creative table. The children have designed and made a mock-up of their very own Delft plate. They were challenged to make their Delft plate look as close to their design as they could.

Wednesday 11 September 2024 KS2 Singing This week, KS2 began their singing assemblies. These will take place weekly on Wednesdays. Children sang beautifully and were accompanied by Mr Armstrong on piano, Mr Reed on the cajon and Mr Watson on the guitar.

Friday 19 July 2024 Year 1 Puppets Year 1 have been busy designing and making their own hand puppets. This included sewing on button eyes and joining the fabric using a running stitch. Children were very proud of their work!

Thursday 18 July 2024 Y4 - Leavers' Festival Music, glitter facepaint and sports! This week, Y4 had a fantastic evening with their friends celebrating the end of their time at Sele First School as they played, danced and laughed throughout the Leavers' Festival. We wish all of our Year 4 children the best as they start their middle school adventures in September.

Friday 5 July 2024 Year Three Bike Ride At the beginning of the week, Year Three dodged the showers to take part in our annual bike ride to Warden. Following the National Cycle Route that runs alongside Tyne Green, the children cycled past Tynedale Golf Course before making their way along the track to Warden.

Thursday 4 July 2024 The Runaway Pea at Hexham Book Festival Reception enjoyed their visit to listen to The Runaway Pea. They created actions for the story and then made their own plates of peas. It was brilliant seeing how differently they all came out - from party peas with hats, to birthday cakes, peas with sunglasses and more!

Wednesday 26 June 2024 Year 2's Steal the Treasure Game For our PE lesson today, we took to the Sele to play a game of ‘Steal the Treasure’. Children were told the value of each item they stole and it was their challenge to collect as many items to make the highest score. Using their whiteboards, they added their values together. After two rounds, in came the robbers to steal people’s treasure! There was some fantastic team work skills and great adding!

Wednesday 26 June 2024 QuadKids County Finals On Monday, 10 children from Year Four represented Tynedale (and Sele) at the Northumberland School Games QuadKids Athletics Finals. The children selected were the top scoring 10 children from the qualifying round that all of Year Four attended at HMS earlier in the month.

Tuesday 25 June 2024 Y4 - Blogs Over the last two weeks, Y4 have been working towards getting their very own blogs set up. After completing their own research into a topic of choice, they created welcome blog posts and their first informative, interactive post. They will continue to add posts in the coming weeks before they view and comment on other children's work.

Friday 21 June 2024 Tiger to go to London! We are delighted to announce that this week The National Gallery in London confirmed they’d like to display our tiger physically. It will need packaged and sent to London for their Take One Picture exhibition. The tiger is undergoing important restoration work in preparation for this! Exhibition dates: 1st August - 1st September 2024.

Thursday 20 June 2024 Writing Day in Reception Reception loved National Writing Day! They particularly enjoyed writing positive notes for teachers and siblings and delivering them round school. They played Human Hungry Hippos on scooter boards, collecting letter balls to spell words.

Thursday 20 June 2024 Y4 - Rounders This week, Year 4 have been back out in the sun for PE! As a year group, Y4 were introduced to the rules of rounders. Playing in teams with children from across the year group, they have been perfecting their batting and fielding skills ahead of their transition visit to the middle schools in the near future. We have seen some excellent teamwork and some fantastic rounders skills - well done!

Thursday 20 June 2024 Y4 - National Writing Day Stories, raps, poems, letters! Year 4 have spent National Writing Day getting creative. In the morning, they chose to visit the magic classroom, the sport classroom or the nature classroom where they were encouraged to explore different genres of writing and writing for different audiences. They created recipes for magic potions, basketball raps, top trump cards and story books.

Monday 17 June 2024 School Games Tennis Today, 16 children from Key Stage Two went to Tynedale Tennis Club to take part in the School Games Tennis Competition. Sele entered a team from Year Four and a team from Year Three, taking part against two other local schools.

Friday 14 June 2024 Y3 Visit HMS This week Year 3 got to visit Hexham Middle School to experience what life is like in Year 5! We did several activities such as forest school, PE, Chemistry and Design and Technology!

Friday 14 June 2024 Year 2's Virtual Visit from Andy Day and Steven Lenton On Friday morning, Year 2 were very excited to welcome famous author Andy Day and illustrator Steven Lenton into their classrooms via Zoom. Whilst on the call, children followed instructions to draw their own ‘Dino Dad’ character. We had some very enthusiastic dancing as part of one of the challenges! Great work Carnivores and Herbivores!

Friday 14 June 2024 Sele First Take One Picture Success! Sele First School are delighted to announce that we have had our Take One Picture sculpture selected to be displayed at a National Gallery exhibition in London. Many of you will have walked past the life size tiger that was created by our current Year 4s and children who are now in Year 5. Our submission success is a tremendous achievement for the children and wider community of Sele First School.

Thursday 13 June 2024 Year 2's Snakes and Ladders In Maths this week, children created their own Snakes and Ladders game. They began by filling in the 100 square with a range of addition and subtraction calculations. Children drew the typical features found in a game, such as a long snake across the board and a ladder to help climb to victory! Finally, they had a go at playing the game using their knowledge of the tens and ones column to support them.

Wednesday 12 June 2024 Y4 - BeYou Transition Workshops Year 4 have been visited by Joy and Sarah from the BeYou team to complete transition themed workshops over the last three weeks. In the workshops, they thought about the worries they had about moving to middle school and how they could turn red thoughts into green thoughts. For example, changing 'I won't know anyone in my class' to 'I've made lots of friends in first school so I can make new friends in middle school'. In the final session, they created fortune tellers with questions about middle school and top tip posters for starting a new school.

Friday 7 June 2024 Year 3 - Ancient Greece This week children have been investigating Ancient Greece. They started by figuring out what they already knew about the Greeks and came up with questions of what they would like to investigate. Children used iPads and non-fiction books to find out the answers to their questions.

Wednesday 5 June 2024 Year 4 - Anglo Saxon Timeline This week, Year 4 ventured outdoors to create an Anglo Saxon timeline. Working in teams, they used their collective memory to replicate the key events of the Anglo Saxon era. One team member at a time, they approached a complete timeline on A4 paper, memorised what they saw, then went back to their team to feedback what they remembered. They then used chalk to complete their own version of the timeline using the collective memory of the team.

Friday 24 May 2024 Maths in Reception Over the last few weeks, Reception have had a focus on number. Everyone has been busy making teen numbers, adding numbers together and most importantly, choosing how to show their answers. With their increasing knowledge of number bonds, children have begun writing number sentences. They also chose to draw part whole models and used lots of practical tools to show their calculations.

Tuesday 21 May 2024 Year 4 Athletics On Friday, Year Four ventured up to Hexham Middle School for a morning of athletics. 65 of our children took part in the School Games competition called 'Quadkids', facilitated by the fantastic Hexham Middle School leaders.

Friday 17 May 2024 Georgia O'Keeffe In Year One, children have been looking at the artwork of Georgia O'Keeffe. We were really impressed with her work around plants in particular. Children used what they'd seen as inspiration to create their own plant artwork.

Thursday 16 May 2024 Dance with Natasha Elizabeth Reception have loved 5 weeks of Dance with Natasha Elizabeth. Working on their own, as a group and in partners, children learnt new routines, moved to different pulses and followed multi-step instructions brilliantly. Everyone thoroughly enjoyed a musical Thursday!

Wednesday 15 May 2024 Year 4 - Portraits Over the last half term, Year 4 have been learning how to draw portraits. Initially, we focussed on the eyes, nose and mouth. Now, we have moved onto creating the full face. We learnt valuable rules to support us to place the features of the face in the correct position. Later in the half term, we will learn how to draw portraits in the style of Modigliani.

Thursday 9 May 2024 Y4 - Tennis Y4 have been out in the sun this week with Tennis Tom. They have been practicing using forehand and backhand to return the ball over the net to their partners. They have shown excellent teamwork as they control their rallies to ensure the ball bounces only once before being returned over the net. They are beginning to recognise ways of scoring points in tennis and have started to play short games against their partners.

Wednesday 8 May 2024 Year 2 - Wellbeing Wednesday As part of this week's Wellbeing Wednesday group, Mrs Hewison took a group of children into the garden. Using their senses, they began by closing their eyes, discussing what they could hear and smell. They were able to spot signs of Spring and identified a range of new flowering plants. Children then drew what they could see.

Thursday 2 May 2024 All About Hexham This week, Reception talked all about their local area - Hexham! They drew maps of their route to school, including bridges, shops, hills and garden gates. Children described their journey, writing in simple sentences. They compared Hexham landmarks to those in London, including The London Eye and Tower Bridge.

Wednesday 1 May 2024 Y4 - Electricity Experiment Over the last few weeks, Y4 have been using the micro-bits to investigate circuits. They worked in small teams to code the micro-bits to light up and buzz when they were part of a complete circuit. They then investigated which materials were conductors and which were insulators by adding items into the circuits. This week, Y4 were challenged to create a switch for their micro-bit. Using card, split pins and paperclips, they created switches which opened and closed allowing the electricity to pass through the circuit when the switch was pressed.

Wednesday 1 May 2024 Year 2 - Team work in the Movement Lab This week in PE, children visited the Movement Lab to continue working on being part of a team. To further develop their teamwork skills they focused on giving examples of good communication within their team.

They named and ranked their qualities in order. Children reflected on their personality traits and highlighted their positive impact within the class.

Monday 22 April 2024 Year 4 - Vattenfall Year 4 started the week with a visit from Matt who works for Vattenfall. Vattenfall specialise in creating wind turbines. We learnt about different types of renewable energy but particularly how we can harness the wind to create power. Matt explained to us what kind of jobs were available at Vattenfall and what goes into creating and installing the enormous wind turbines. The children asked some interesting questions regarding the differences between onshore and offshore wind turbines.

Thursday 18 April 2024 The Earth and 3D Shapes As Reception begin their topic, Maps Maps Maps, they began with the world! Children loved looking at world maps and globes, identifying animals in different continents and noticing land, sea and desert. They created suncatcher globes and wrote post-it notes about things and people they love on Earth.

Thursday 18 April 2024 Year 4 - Vindolanda and Roman Army Museum This week, Year 4 visited the Roman Army Museum and Vindolanda. At the Roman Army Museum, amazingly, we were taught Latin and Roman numerals by a hologram Roman teacher! We also explored the Museum and watched a short film about the history of the area surrounding Hadrian’s Wall. At Vindolanda, we searched for clues around the ruins of the fort to solve a crossword problem. The children showed excellent resilience, persevering through the challenge despite the wet and cold conditions. Great job Year 4!

Monday 15 April 2024 Victorian Classroom Experience - Year 2 On Monday morning as Year 2 children entered the classroom they noticed that some of their normal routines and procedures had been replaced by Victorian tasks.

Thursday 28 March 2024 Year 1 Scones Linked to their work on measures in Maths, Year 1 have been baking scones. They looked at accurate weighing and measuring of the ingredients before combining the ingredients using a rubbing method.

Wednesday 27 March 2024 Stone Age Day Today was Stone Age Day in Year 3. We started the morning off in darkness and only allowed to whisper while we did cave paintings of Stone Age animals such as the Woolly Mammoth, Direwolf and the Gigantopithecus.

Tuesday 26 March 2024 Reception's Dinosaurs and Doubles Last week, Reception finished their fortnight on Dinosaurs. They learnt about Mary Anning, the pioneering paleontologist and fossil collector. They compared Mary's everyday life to their own, noiticing similarities and differences between the past and present.

Friday 22 March 2024 Year 1 Observational Drawing Year 1 have been working hard to develop their drawing skills. They have looked at shading, hatching and cross hatching alongside looking at the different shapes they can see in an object. Today, children brought in a favourite bear to draw from observation. Their drawings have been amazing! Well done Year 1!

Tuesday 19 March 2024 Year 2's Outdoor Learning As part of our nature and challenge scientific skills, Year 2 explored the garden to identify some unexpected animals hiding in the wrong habitat.

Friday 15 March 2024 Year 1 Investigating Toys Year 1 have been investigating old and new toys in History. Children were tasked with the role of sorting out a collection of toys as museum curators. They found out key information about the toys including what they are made from, how old they are and any extra facts.

Thursday 14 March 2024 Reception Spring Stay and Play Children enjoyed welcoming grown ups into the classroom for Stay and Play sessions this week. There was lots of drawing and building, and the odd appearance from the chicks too!

Wednesday 13 March 2024 Y4 - Cockshaw Burn Visit This week, Y4 visited Cockshaw Burn to measure the flow of the river. First they measured a distance of 10m. They then dropped a dog biscuit into the river and timed how long it took to float 10 metres downstream. Children also created a field sketch of the river and it's surroundings.

Tuesday 5 March 2024 Year 1 Mosque Visit Today, Year 1 visited Newcastle Central Mosque linked to their work in RE on Sacred Places. They shared their current knowledge of Islam with Brother Khadim alongside learning lots of new facts.

Tuesday 5 March 2024 Y3 Handball This half term we’ve been learning the skills needed for Handball. We’ve been doing games that will help us practice bouncing, throwing and catching. We played a game of Sharks which involved trying to bounce a ball past the sharks who were trying to grab the ball from us. Some children quickly worked out that it is better for everyone to make a line to make it more difficult for people to get across. Others made tweaks and suggestions for the best way to defend.

Wednesday 28 February 2024 Holi - Year 4 Holi is a popular and significant Hindu festival celebrated as the Festival of Colours, Love, and Spring. It celebrates the eternal and divine love of the deities Radha and Krishna. Additionally, the day signifies the triumph of good over evil, as it commemorates the victory of Vishnu as Narasimha over Hiranyakashipu. Year 4 researched the Holi festival, wrote what they had learnt onto post-it notes and then added the post-it notes to our Holi festival working wall.

Friday 9 February 2024 Year 1 Stop Motion Year 1 worked with Mr Ibbertson to learn how to create a simple stop motion film. They created their short film using multiple photos to create a clip of a ball rolling across the table. Some children then challenged themselves to make their ball move up and down different objects with a few extra characters captured for interest. Well done Year 1!

Thursday 8 February 2024 Year 4 TinkerCad This week, Year 4 have been exploring the 3D visualisation program, TinkerCad. We learnt how to manipulate 3D shapes by stretching, moving and rotating them. Equipped with these skills, we created some Hogwarts style castles. Some of our designs will be printed in our 3D printer.

Monday 5 February 2024 Year 3 Day 1 - Drone Visitor! Today we had a visit from Jason, our visiting expert in the way of the force. He told us all about his work as a drone pilot. He showed us examples of drones from quadcopters to octocopters all the way to military drones. We listened to all the different uses of drones. Did you know that they even use drones to help put out fires! Then, best of all, Jason showed us how he pilots drones by making one fly in our school hall! Thank you Jason!

Thursday 1 February 2024 Storytelling Week To mark National Storytelling Week, Reception read The Incredible Book Eating Boy. Children made puppets with which to tell their own tales (including tickets to come to the show), wrote about their favourite stories and made lots of lists. They used storytelling dice to tell jumbled up stories, change the endings and make ordinary stories funny.

Thursday 1 February 2024 Year 2's Stop Motion Animation Project As part of the Explorers topic in Year 2, children have been busy planning and creating their very own Stop Motion Animation. They have created their own alien and props using modelling clay to create a short story. Children enjoyed using the app, 'I Can Animate' and some even want to try this at home!

Wednesday 24 January 2024 Year 4 - River Demonstration This week, Year 4 participated in a river demonstration. It involved using a large tarpaulin draped over different sized objects to create a river basin. As water poured down from the highest part of the tarpaulin, we described the route of the water as it left the source. Tributaries joined larger streams of water at confluences and then water flooded exposed river banks. Finally, the water reached the mouth of the river and ended up in a sea or lake.

Wednesday 24 January 2024 Y2's Maths - Astronaut Shopping Centre This week in Maths, children visited a shopping centre for astronauts. They chose two items and added the prices together to see if they could purchase it using a £5.00 note. It turns out, they couldn’t purchase a laptop and astronaut suit, it was 5p over their budget!

Friday 19 January 2024 Ice Experiments and Supertato The Evil Pea appeared in Reception on Monday, having captured Fred Frog and left some mean clues. Everyone has been hard at work writing and plotting ways to capture Evil Pea - including ladders, parachutes, aeroplanes, trampolines and Spiderman powers. The classrooms are covered in messages both to the Evil Pea and Supertato's characters.

Friday 19 January 2024 Bee Aware To start their Geography topic of Food and Farming, Year 3 were visited by a local beekeeper. They found out many facts about bees and were especially interested to hear that bees are extremely important for our survival. The children also got to see a range of beekeeping equipment up close, such as a smoker and part of a hive. Some lucky children even got to try on a full bee keeping suit!

Thursday 18 January 2024 Year 1 Giant Mystery! This week, Year 1 found some unusual clues in the school garden! A castle, some beans and a giant footprint all pointed towards a giant visitor in the garden! Children used an inference square to work out what the ‘knew’ and what they ‘thought they knew’ from the clues. They planned and wrote a newspaper report to share the news of the mystery.

Wednesday 17 January 2024 Year 4 Human Rights This week, Year 4 read about the life of Malala Yousafzai, a young girl who campaigned for equal access to education in Pakistan. Malala wrote a blog about the injustices happening in her country but was targeted because of this. Malala continues to fight for equal rights, giving inspiring speeches around the world. Year 4 wrote about how Malala’s story inspired them.

Monday 15 January 2024 Year 2 Human Rights Week Year 2 read the story 'A Birthday for Ben' as part of their ‘right to healthcare’ focus for Human Rights week. They discussed the importance of healthcare and the positive impact it can have on people. Children wrote on a speech bubble how they have used healthcare services and why it was important to them.

Friday 12 January 2024 Magnificent Machines This half term, Reception are learning about Magnificent Machines. Following their own interests, children spent the first week back investigating robots! They programmed Ozobots to follow a marked path along paper and used screwdrivers and wire cutters to dismantle broken technology and see how it works.

Wednesday 10 January 2024 Year 1 Traditional Tales This week Year 1 have been thinking about different traditional tales starting with Little Red Riding Hood. They listened to the traditional story alongside alternative versions including The Wolf’s Story by Toby Forward. They thought about questions they would like to ask the wolf in order to give him a second chance. They planned and wrote a letter asking their chosen questions.

Monday 8 January 2024 4LW Advance to finals! The children of 4LW returned to the exciting news that their class had qualified to the virtual finals of the School Games multi skills competition on Friday 19th January. All of KS2 took part in the qualifying events held in school before Christmas, but 4LW were judged to have finished in second place in all of Tynedale, finishing behind Bellingham Primary. They'll now go on to compete against 11 other schools from across Northumberland via a live Zoom competition. The other areas of Northumberland represented are; Ashington and Coquet, Blyth and Bedlington, Cramlington and Seaton Valley, Morpeth and Ponteland, North Northumberland and finally Tynedale. Best of luck to all involved!

Monday 8 January 2024 The PE Library Competition Thank you to everyone who took part in the PE Library banner competition. We had some absolutely amazing entries and it made judging a winner incredibly difficult. However, we've recently had the banner created by Top Signs of Hexham and we're pleased to announce that the winning design was by Elliott in Year Four. The banner will be displayed every Monday between 3:15-3:30 after school showing where the PE Library is. Please come along and borrow some of our excellent equipment totally free of charge! Return all equipment directly to the PE Library or to the blue drop box beside the front door!

Thursday 21 December 2023 KS2 Choir out and about! This week children from KS2 choir went out into Hexham to sing for passers by on the streets. The first performance took place on Fore street, where we sung to help raise money for Hexham Rotary Club. After this we went to the Hospital to sing for the residents. We had a fantastic time and thoroughly enjoyed performing to lots of people!

Tuesday 19 December 2023 Biscuits and Hot Chocolate around the Firepit To celebrate Winter and the end of term, Reception made biscuits and hot chocolate. Having used sets of old balance scales in the classroom for weeks, they were intrigued by modern scales! They measured butter, sugar and flour and combined it to make dough.

Tuesday 19 December 2023 Y2's Great Fire of London Models In Art this half term, children have created their own Great Fire of London model. They began by drawing the skyline on black card and used oil pastels to create flames. The following week, they used red paint to create a fiery background. Using a piece of wooden dowel they hung a leather water bucket (used in 1666) to create the illusion of putting out the flames amongst the houses.

Friday 15 December 2023 Year 1 Can't You Sleep Little Bear Over the past two weeks, Year 1 have been thinking of different ways to help Little Bear get to sleep. They retold the stories in their own words including ideas such as sing a lullaby, share a hot chocolate or soup and make a different style lantern.

Thursday 14 December 2023 Year One Nativity Today was the turn of Year One to come together and perform their Nativity at Hexham Abbey. The story was called 'Baarmy Bethlehem' and followed the journey of three sheep on a hunt to find a party. They met shepherds, kings and even Caesar himself on their travels! Eventually, they found a special celebration in a stable in Bethlehem. We hope you enjoyed the performance!

Tuesday 12 December 2023 Year 2's 1666 London Houses To conclude their topic of The Great Fire of London, children followed instructions to build their own 1666 house. They used their knowledge of 3D shape to fold a net to create a cube for the building and a triangular prism for the roof. Children used black card to add detail and create a panel effect.

Friday 8 December 2023 Santa Dash 2023 Today, all of Sele First School took on the Santa Dash fun run! It was absolutely amazing to see so many of our school community to come together for the different races and share their festive spirit. The day was filled with Santa hats, antlers, tinsel and even some grown-ups in full Santa costume! Thank you to the excellent QEHS sports leaders for facilitating the KS1 and KS2 events; and thanks to our own Year Four leaders who warmed up and ran the Reception and Nursery events. The children were all thrilled to receive their hard earned medal! Well done to all who took part!

Friday 8 December 2023 Year 1 Where in the World? This week Year 1 have extended their knowledge of the World through learning about animals and landmarks of Australia. Children made comparisons between UK animals and those found in Australia alongside learning about famous landmarks and asking further questions.

Friday 8 December 2023 Sport Tynedale Award Winners On Thursday, Sport Tynedale hosted their annual awards evening recognising the efforts and talents of local sporting clubs and individuals. We are extremely proud to announce that we we awarded as a school for our 'outstanding contribution to sport and physical activity' and given the 'KS2 Making Active Memories' award. The award recognises the in school offer of PE and physical activity and also the extra-curricular and wider events we've taken part in, such as the Santa Dash, #Letgirlsplay football event, Park Run takeover, the events we do at Wentworth and much, much more. The award was presented to some of our KS2 Sports Leaders by Helen Robson and Edward Heslop from Active Northumberland and Sport Tynedale respectively.

Wednesday 6 December 2023 Y4 - Digestion This week, Y4 participated in a digestion demonstration. During this, they found out about the salivary glands and how food travels down the oesophagus to the stomach. They discovered the role that gastric acid plays in breaking down the food before travelling through the small and large intestine before the waste products are removed from the body.

Wednesday 29 November 2023 Y4 - Researching London This week, Y4 started their research to find out about London in preparation for writing a non-chronological report. Using the Chromebooks and Google Earth, they found key information about The National Art Gallery, Buckingham Palace, Parliament, transport around London and the location of key landmarks. We’re looking forward to reading their non-chronological reports later this week.

Wednesday 22 November 2023 Year 2 - Movement Lab In the Movement Lab today, children were challenged to work with a partner to collect pieces of treasure from the middle of the room. HOWEVER, they were given a time limit! Children had to collect a piece of treasure in the same time it took for their partner to throw and catch a ball.

Friday 17 November 2023 Rainforests of the world! This week in Geography, Children have been learning about the rainforest of the world. They’ve investigates the atlases to see if they could find the name of the different tropical rainforests. We looked at graphs of the average rainfall across the year to think about the climate. Rainforests are hot and wet all year round which makes them very humid.

Thursday 16 November 2023 KS1 Visit to St. Mary's Lighthouse This week, KS1 children visited St. Mary's Lighthouse. The children thoroughly enjoyed rock-pooling and found lobsters, crabs, prawns, sea snails and even a sea scorpion! They also saw some sleepy seals on the rocks on the way up to the lighthouse.

Tuesday 14 November 2023 Y4 Muddy Maths - Perimeter This week, Y4 started their new 'measures' Maths topic with a Muddy Maths lesson. After learning what perimeter means, children worked in pairs to gather leaves of different sizes and shapes. They estimated which leaves had the largest and smallest perimeters and ordered the leaves in ascending order based on these predictions. Finally, using string and a ruler to measure the perimeter of each leaf in centimetres.

Wednesday 8 November 2023 Year 2's iPad Time During this week's iPad session, children had tinker time on an app called Key Note. They explored what they would be able to create using the app. Children enjoyed creating moving animations where characters could move across the screen. Most children were able to begin their own presentation using images.

Tuesday 7 November 2023 Year 4 Lantern Making This week, Year 4 are working with Local Artists Alan Scully and Deni Riach from the Queen’s Hall Arts Centre. In preparation for the Hexham Lantern Parade, we are creating a giant willow dragon fly which will be lit up with lights and carried through Hexham on Friday 17th of November. Monday 6 November 2023 Year 1 Science Seasonal Changes Year 1 took advantage of the great weather this afternoon to complete a Science task linked to their new focus on Seasonal Changes. Children were introduced to a ‘walking circle’ to engage in talk, finding out key information about their partner before discussing a picture linked to the different seasons. Children then sorted their pictures according to the season they were most likely to be linked to.

Thursday 26 October 2023 Reception's Take One Picture Open Day A day full of art and witch's potions in Reception! Children built on their printing skills from this half term to make stamps using textured materials. They made paper animations of boats in stormy seas and created disgusting recipes for Winnie's Pumpkin.

Friday 13 October 2023 Pantosaurus Day On Friday, children across school engaged with activities to help them understand the PANTS rule, developed by NSPCC. They learned the acrostic poem, sang the pantosaurus song and participated in discussions about appropriate and inappropriate touch, secrets, trusted adults and their bodies belonging to them.

Thursday 12 October 2023 Scientists! This week Year 3 have completed a science enquiry experiment to finish off our topic on Light. We started off learning about artificial and natural light sources and how they differ from reflectors. Then Year 3 thought about what shadows were; the absence of light!

Thursday 12 October 2023 Shape sorters! Nursery have been shape sorters! We have been finding different shapes around the Nursery and sorting them into different groups. We have been able to name some of the basic 2D shapes.

Thursday 12 October 2023 Mono Printing WOW Reception! We loved printing stormy waves for our masterpieces this week. Children loved the simplicity of the process and the big reveal as they uncovered their pattern. These will form the sea in their final Take One Picture piece, adding texture and movement to their art.

Thursday 12 October 2023 Y4 Times Table Rockstars The Times Table Rockstars battles continued this week in Y4! Each week, 4W, 4H and 4AS battle it out to see which class are the Rockstar Champions. This week, children competed on Garage, completing times table questions as quick as they can earn points for their team! The points are still being counted and the results will be announced soon.

Wednesday 11 October 2023 Year 1 Masterpiece Year 1 are in the final stages of assembling their Take One Picture masterpiece. Using the show boxes that were kindly donated, children have turned them into a seascape diorama including painted background, curled paper waves, collaged suns and biro pen lighthouses. We are very proud of our work!

Wednesday 11 October 2023 KS2 Cross Country County Championships On Tuesday, 23 children from across Key Stage 2 took part in the Northumberland Schools Athletics Association Cross Country County Championships at Temple Park, South Shields. With children from all over the North East region taking part, we knew the competition was going to be fierce. However, all children gave the challenging course their best efforts and completed the team event with steely determination. We even managed a couple of top ten finishes, which is all the more impressive given the number of children in each race averaged at around 200. Well done to those who took part and for representing the school with excellent effort and great resilience. We eagerly await the final results which should be published by the end of the week.

Wednesday 4 October 2023 Year 1 Basecamp This week Year 1 have ventured to basecamp in the Antarctic to study the animals. They have ranked items according to how important they are for their travels and sent letters back home.

Tuesday 3 October 2023 Museum of the Moon Reception had a wonderful lunar trip to the Abbey today to visit the Museum of the Moon. The Abbey staff asked children to share their thoughts about the moon. Some said it was a sphere and that it had craters, whilst others said they loved the moon!

Tuesday 3 October 2023 Y4 Chocolate Experiment As Y4 continue to learn about states of matter, children worked within their Science teams to investigate whether different types of chocolate melt at different speeds. They created vessels to hold the pieces of chocolate to float on a bath of hot water. The 'observers' within the team measured the time taken for white, dark and milk chocolate to melt while the 'recorders' created a table to record their results. After all the chocolate melted, the children had the chance to feedback their findings to the rest of the class.

Monday 2 October 2023 The PE Library returns to Sele! Today marks the return of the PE Library to Sele First School. At the top of the yard, our Year Four Sports Leaders will be ready and waiting to offer you the chance to loan some sports equipment for use at home. This is totally free of charge and will run every Monday from 3:15-3:30. Returning the equipment couldn't be easier. Simply drop it back into the large blue container by the main entrance when you would like to return it - we suggest around a week makes for a good loan! Our Leaders will catalogue the equipment and get it ready for future use! If you have any questions, come and ask us at the PE Library!

Friday 29 September 2023 RE - The Bible Some children were asked to walk from one side of the room to the other while blindfolded and then were asked how they felt while doing this. Children were given ‘guides’ ( a partner) to help them and asked to repeat their walk.

Friday 29 September 2023 Reception Gymnastics This half term, Reception are enjoying Gymnastics lessons with our specialist coach, Gayle Smith. This week they practised bunny hops, leaping over benches, jumping with two feet together, holding balances with upper arm strength and jumping into a squat position.

Thursday 28 September 2023 Year 2 Netball Club Today was the first after school session of Year 2 Netball with Kathie Keady of Hexham Junior Netball Club. The children enjoyed learning movement games with lots of netball twists to them. They also spent some time honing their throwing and catching skills. They look forward to next weeks session!

Wednesday 27 September 2023 Y4 - States of Matter Experiment This week in Science, we investigated the temperature of water over a day. We used water in different states. One glass had room temperature water in, one had boiling water in and one was full of ice cubes. Year 4s had their own scientific roles. Team leaders set the test up, Recorders and Observers read the thermometers and wrote down temperatures and the Scientists explained what had happened at the end of the day.

Wednesday 27 September 2023 Year 1 - Soft Start - Fine Motor Focus During the 'soft start' and up until registration, Year 1 have been focusing on their fine motor control. Each class has had a different task to complete that we will rotate at the start of each new week. In 1T, children have been threading beads onto bead strings, weaving paper and using pipe cleaners to make bracelets with beads. 1M have been manipulating small objects like match sticks and mini gems to make patterns. In 1S, children have been taking part in the playdough disco! They've rolled, squashed, prodded and squeezed their dough into lots of interesting shapes! Check out these photos from our activities!

Wednesday 20 September 2023 Y4 RE Food Tasting After learning about the festival of Rosh Hashanah, Year 4 sampled some of the food that Jewish people would eat during this celebration. They ate apples dipped in honey - eaten in the hope of a ‘sweet’ new year, and pomegranates - eaten because they traditionally have 613 seeds, the number of rules that Jews are asked to follow in the Torah.

Wednesday 20 September 2023 Year 1 - The Big Book of the Blue Using the non-fiction text The Big Book of the Blue as inspiration, this week children have been thinking about the oceans and the animals that live there. They have created their own deep sea animals; designed and created a simple raft and made waves for a piece of artwork by curling and rolling paper.

Friday 15 September 2023 Looking at Egger This week in Y3 children have started their Geography topic on Egger: From Forest to Factory. We talked about how some people think it is a ‘cloud factory’ when in fact it is a manufacturing plant that makes chipboard. We looked at the ingredients that they use to create their chipboard and tried to sort them into their categories of recycled materials, hackwood and sawdust.
